Rumors for June, 2010

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Arizona Diamondbacks cannot keep both Dan Haren and Edwin Jackson since they make over $21 million combined next season.

The Diamondbacks will have several options for both pitchers. Despite one executive saying, “[Haren's] not at the top of anyone’s list, he’s just another name,” come trade deadline he may be an option for several teams.

Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe says scouts from the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers all came out to watch Haren’s last start, a 9-3 loss to the Yankees. He went seven innings and allowed six hits and three runs. Cafardo says, “It will be interesting to see whether the Diamondbacks wind up dealing their best starter and whether anyone will break the bank to get him.”

On Saturday, there was a rumor that the Washington Nationals could be interested in Jackson, but his wildness could be a liability that the Nats may not want to inherit.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Milwaukee Brewers are still in search for pitching and the Toronto Blue Jays could be a potential match.

The Brewers are 8.5 games back in the NL Central, but team owner Mark Attanasio is not ready to surrender the season.

The Blue Jays like Double-A infielder Brett Lawrie, a Canadian from British Columbia, but the Brewers would be reluctant to trade him since there could be an exodus of infielders after next season due to free agency. However, the team may consider it if the Jays send left-handed pitcher Brett Cecil or right-handed pitcher Shaun Marcum their way.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Los Angeles Angels still want to add a first baseman. Their everday first baseman, Kendry Morales, was injured in late May after breaking his leg on a walk-off grand slam.

Washington Nationals first baseman, Adam Dunn, is a potential target. Dunn is wrapping up a two-year, $20 million contract. He has publicly said he wants to stay in Washington and the team and his agent have been talking, but nothing formal has been worked out.

Another option is Arizona Diamondback’s first baseman, Adam LaRoche. In either case, if the Angels acquire a new first baseman, the incumbent Mike Napoli could become trade bait.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says 29-year-old Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano is capable of winning 12-15 games a year and should be enough to trade him, but the team will need to eat a large portion of the $45 million left on his contract.

Rosenthal reminds us that the Chicago Cubs came out financially ahead when they traded Milton Bradley to the Seattle Mariners last winter.

If Zambrano can keep his cool then it’s possible that another team may want him. On Friday, Zambrano left after one inning of work and was eventually suspended for his tirade in the dugout.  Starting pitching is very valuable come trade deadline, and if the Cubs are definitely out of it in a few weeks, then the team may be able to get somebody to bite on Zambrano.

According to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, the Seattle Mariners have acquired Russell Branyan from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for two Minor Leaguers – Triple-A center fielder Ezequiel Carrera and High Single-A shortstop Juan Diaz. The Mariners will also either pay the remainder of Branyan’s $2 million contract or send the Mariners a player to be named later.

The Indians are expected to recall first baseman Matt LaPorta from Triple-A Columbus on Sunday and start him at first base the rest of the season.

This is an odd move for the Seattle Mariners since they are 14 games out of first place in the AL West and acquiring a slugger and his salary does not make sense. It’s possible that they could use Branyan as a trading chip as the July trade deadline approaches.

Branyan, 34, is batting .263 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs. He returns to a club where he spent the entire 2009 season with. With Seattle last season, he hit .251/.347/.520.

6/21 18:05: According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, Moeller cleared waivers and accepted an outright back to Triple-A Scranton.

6/21 19:33: WFAN says the New York Yankees have designated catcher Chad Moeller for assignment. In his place, the team has called up outfielder Colin Curtis.

Moeller, 35, was hitting .182 (2-for-11) with 1 walk. He started four games at catcher with the Yankees this season.

6/26 17:15: According to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com, he says the word from Kansas City is that the team is asking for “way too much” for DeJesus.

6/26 09:58: Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald says the Red Sox have contacted multiple teams to gauge the available of outfielders. One conversation centered around Kansas City Royals’ David DeJesus.

The Royals have previously let it be known that DeJesus is available, but  Because he comes relatively cheap, the Royals will want a Major League ready player in exchange for DeJesus. DeJesus is being paid $4.7 million this season and there’s a $6 million club option for 2011.

The Red Sox are in need of outfield help since Jacoby Ellsbury has been out due to broken ribs. He is not expected to be back until after the All-Star break.

It’s possible that Bobby Valentine is getting closer to claiming the Marlins’ managerial position. Accordin to Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post, Marlins’ first base coach Dave Collins has resigned from his position. Copozi wonders if Collins resignation is related to Valentine wanting to bring in his own people.

Valentine is in the middle of the interview process with Marlins management and could installed as manager at anytime. It’s possible that once he assumes the position, he could rehaul the coaching staff and bring in his own coaches.
