ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark covered a wide range of topics today. The most prolific issue he covered was that of Mr. Hanley Ramirez. Starks noted that during the emotional roller coaster down in Florida, teams were calling about his potential availability. While the Marlins front office was still upset, they were thinking with their heads and told teams he was not available… Well at least until after 2012 when the new ballpark opens.
-The Royals might not be in garage sell mode just yet. According to one GM, “it makes no sense to make a managerial change. What this says is, they’re trying to salvage the season.” The Royals are also telling teams to call back in a month as they continue to shoot down teams that have asked about Joakim Soria or Alex Gordon. Surprisingly not one club has shown any serious interest in Jose Guillen — who, by the way, has hit .180, with zero homers and just two extra-base hits, in the past 2½ weeks. Gee I wonder why.
- Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has admitted that the Phillies are interested in Pedro Martinez. Though no deal is in place, look for Martinez to sign with the Phillies or another team in the up coming month.
-One baseball official noted that amateur pitcher Jameson Taillon is “way overpriced.” Look for Taillon to possibly fall in the draft as his price tag will rise.
- Is Mariano Rivera on his last leg? A recent unnamed scout said “I know this is heresy, but I think he’s slipping because his velocity is not there. He’s only about 89-90-91 [mph] — especially after about 10 pitches. He’s not 93-94 anymore, and it’s made a big difference.”
