Rumors for May, 2010

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Boston Red Sox are tracking the progress of Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta in Triple-A Colorado Springs in case the Rockies make him available.

Ianetta, 27, was not very productive in the 8 games that he played with Colorado this season, and was therefore sent to Triple-A. He signed a three-year, $8.35 million contract through 2012 with a club option for 2013.

5/21 10:13: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says he expects Howry to join the team in Texas today.

5/20 01:11: According to Paul Sullivan, the Cubs are close to signing Howry. No signing has been made, but Howry will be in a Cubs uniform very soon.

5/19 19:20: Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune says the Cubs are interested in veteran right-handed pitcher Bob Howry.

Howry was waived by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He posted a 1-0 record with a 10.67 ERA in 14 appearances with the D-backs.

The Cubs are searching for a right-handed middle reliever and Howry has been a favorite of GM Jim Hendry. Earlier today PRO Rumors said the Cubs have been actively looking to add a player to their bullpen.

The Cubs have been linked to Toronto’s Jason Frasor and Scott Downs and San Diego’s Heath Bell, but with both teams off to strong starts, it’s unlikely that those players will be moved anytime soon.

ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark covered a wide range of topics today. The most prolific issue he covered was that of Mr. Hanley Ramirez. Starks noted that during the emotional roller coaster down in Florida, teams were calling about his potential availability. While the Marlins front office was still upset, they were thinking with their heads and told teams he was not available… Well at least until after 2012 when the new ballpark opens.

-The Royals might not be in garage sell mode just yet. According to one GM, “it makes no sense to make a managerial change. What this says is, they’re trying to salvage the season.” The Royals are also telling teams to call back in a month as they continue to shoot down teams that have asked about Joakim Soria or Alex Gordon. Surprisingly not one club has shown any serious interest in Jose Guillen — who, by the way, has hit .180, with zero homers and just two extra-base hits, in the past 2½ weeks. Gee I wonder why.

- Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has admitted that the Phillies are interested in Pedro Martinez. Though no deal is in place, look for Martinez to sign with the Phillies or another team in the up coming month.

-One baseball official noted that amateur pitcher Jameson Taillon is “way overpriced.” Look for Taillon to possibly fall in the draft as his price tag will rise.

- Is Mariano Rivera on his last leg? A recent unnamed scout said “I know this is heresy, but I think he’s slipping because his velocity is not there. He’s only about 89-90-91 [mph] — especially after about 10 pitches. He’s not 93-94 anymore, and it’s made a big difference.”

According to Chad Finn of the Boston GlobeKevin Millar, former Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar has join NESN as a studio analyst. He will make his debut on the May 27 pregame shore before the Red Sox host the Kansas City Royals.

Millar also recently joined MLB Network as a studio analyst, and is contributing to the Fox network’s baseball coverage, including handling studio analyst duties Saturday night when the Red Sox play the Phillies.

Millar signed with the independent St. Paul Saints at the beginning of May, but his contract allows him to leave the team to fulfill his broadcasting duties.

Kazuo Matsui to the Rockies?

Posted by: Allan | Comments View Comments

kaz_matsuiThomas Harding of MLB.com speculates that Kazuo Matsui could find his way back to the Colorado Rockies if he clears waivers. Harding says, “if he clears waivers, it’s fair to say the Rockies have reason to be intrigued.”

Matsui was released by the Houston Astros yesterday.

Matsui’s could add depth to the Rockies and spell Clint Barmes if he continues to struggle offensively and defensively.

The Astros’ second baseman had begun the season with a .141 average, and most recently, a 1-31 skid which culminated in his departure. You can see his complete stats here.

Luis CastilloKen Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Mets are shopping Luis Castillo.

The Mets are again expressing a willingness to trade Castillo, and the team has contacted the Colorado Rockies.

The problem is Castillo’s contract. Castillo is guaranteed $6 million this season and $6 million in 2011. If the Mets and Rockies agreed to a trade, the Mets will likely have to pay almost all of that money.

Pat Burrell5/20 17:28: Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says the Giants have no serious interest in free agent outfielder Pat Burrell.

Corey Brock of MLB.com writer for the Padres tweets:

Trust me on this; the Padres have no interest at all in OF Pat Burrell.

5/20 15:01: According to Mychael Urban of Comcast SportsNet, he tweets:

#sfgiants fans, please stop thinking Pat Burrell might be an option. I know this team. Dude is NOT an option. He’s a DH at best. Book it.

5/20 13:34: According to San Jose Mercury’s Andrew Baggarly, free agent Pat Burrell has received interest from the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres and he could be weighing offers.

Burrell is originally from the San Francisco Bay area, so that could play into his decision.

Burrell was designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend and cleared waivers today. Any team interested in Burrell would have to pay the pro-rated portion of the league’s minimum $400,000 salary (about $300,000). The Rays will pay the remaining $6.5 million on his $9 million contract.

Burrell, 33, was hitting .202/.292/.333 in 24 games with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Even Big League managers like Ozzie Guillen have dreams to win the lottery.  Here’s Guillen’s twitter post from earlier today:

ozzie_guillen_lottery

We’re assuming that he wants to win either the Mega Millions ($54 million) or the Powerball ($170 million) since there is no such thing as the “mega ball”.
