According to T.R. Sullivan and Chris Cox of MLB.comRod Barajas, the Texas Rangers will have interest in catcher Rod Barajas if the New York Mets look to move him.

Barajas is off to strong start with a .276 batting average, 10 home runs and 24 RBIs in his first 33 games. The Mets are not in selling mode, but they are in last place in the NL East. The Mets may not start selling off until  much closer to the trading deadline in late July.

Barajas is signed to a one-year, $500,000 contract with another $1 million in performance bonuses – a salary that’s very attractive to the Texas Rangers.

Here’s video of a weird injury. Umpire John Hirschbeck is struck in the face mask by a warm up throw by Pirates pitcher Chris Narveso in the first inning between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers.

Hirschbeck, best remembered for the Roberto Alomar spitting incident, left the game after the first inning. The Pirates scored three times in the first inning prompting the Pirates trainers the check him out (no joke intended).

According to Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post, former Washington Nationals pitcher Brian Bruney cleared waivers earlier this week, but will refuse his assignment to the Minor Leagues. Kilgore adds that Bruney believes he is a Major League pitcher and he doesn’t want to start over by accepting an assignment to the Minor Leagues.

The Nationals have about a week to trade the reliever or give his his outright release, at which the time Nationals will be responsible for his contract until he signs with another team. He signed for a $1.5 million one-year contract after winning an arbitration hearing.

In 2010, Bruney allowed 20 walks, 21 hits in 17 2/3 innings with a 7.64 ERA.

5/21 16:53: According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, Duanel Jones’ paperwork has finally cleared and his signing with the San Diego Padres for $900,000 is now official.

4/14 18:37: Corey Brock of MLB.com tweets, “Nothing imminent about the a potential Padres signing of DR prospect Duanel Jones. Moving toward that, I’m hearing. Just won’t happen soon.”

4/14 13:34: Melissa Segura of Sports Illustrated tweets that Dominican Republic prospect Duanel Jones signed a $900,000 deal with the San Diego Padres. The deal is pending the approval of Major League Baseball.

Jones originally signed with the San Francisco Giants, but his contract was voided after he failed a team-administered drug test, according to Jorge Arangure Jr. in January 2010. At the time, the 16-year-old third baseman signed a $1.3 million contract.

Once he starts to play professional ball for the Padres, Jones will have to serve his 50 game suspension.

Moral of the story: take drugs and lose $400,000.

Josh Towers released by Dodgers

Posted by: Ryan | Comments View Comments

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com is reporting that Triple-A Albuquerque pitcher Josh Towers was granted his release by the Dodgers and replaced in the rotation by Seth Etherton, a first-round pick of the Angels in 1998 out of USC.

Towers was 2-5 with an 8.05 ERA at Albuquerque and had an opt-out in his contract if he wasn’t called up to the Major Leagues. He is the second veteran to opt out and leave the organization this week. The other was reliever Luis Ayala, who signed with Arizona earlier this week.

The 33-year-old Towers, a former 13-game winner in the Major Leagues with Toronto, nearly made the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster but lost out to Russ Ortiz, who was released after less than two weeks with the club.

Etherton who has floated around the league had his best season with the Angels by posting a 5-1 record with a 5.52 ERA in 11 games.  Good luck Seth!

Allen Stern of Center Networksipad points out that laptop computers including the new Apple iPad are not allowed inside Yankee Stadium. Stern speculates that Yankee Stadium officials have decided that the iPad poses a safety risk. Additional banned devices are those that, “…may interfere with and/or distract any sports participant, other patron, audio or audio/visual telecast or recording of the game or any technology-related service provided in Yankee Stadium.”

One individual writes about her frustrations with the iPad and Yankee Stadium at the IGN forums:

I’m at the game right now, watching them play the Red Sox. The security people told me it was not allowed and I was turned away at the gates.

Why on earth would they have this policy? Terrorism concerns? I couldn’t get an answer. I snuck it in under my jacket.. I bring it to Fenway all the time and they don’t care.

Scary.
