Rays and Ben Zobrist reach five-year extension

Ben Zobrist4/23 11:16: The Tampa Bay Tribune tweets that the new deal is $18 million guaranteed through 2013 with club options at $7 million and $7.5 million in 2014 and 2015.

4/23 03:46: Bill Chastain of MLB.com says that the Tampa Bay Rays and infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist have agreed to a five-year extension. The deal will formally be announced later on Friday.

The first three years of the extension are guaranteed with team options in 2014 and 2015. This will cover Zobrist through his arbitration eligible years and his first two years of free agency.

Zobrist is added to a list of the Ray’s core players that the team has proactively signed to long-term deals. Players include: Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, James Shields, Carlos Pena, Scott Kazmir, Evan Longoria, and Dan Wheeler

Zobrist, 28, is a career .259/.343/.453 hitter. He hit 27 home runs and drove in 91 RBIs in 2009. you can see Zobrist’s statistics here.
