PRO Rumors: Jason LaRue, Marvin Benard, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, David Ortiz, Cliff Lee

By Allan

Good morning! Here are your Monday morning PRO Rumors:

  • Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says that catcher Jason LaRue will be examined on Monday after sustaining a right hamstring strain on Sunday. Straus guesses that a roster move is coming.
  • Former San Francisco Giant Marvin Benard admitted that he used steroids in 2002, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. “Yes, I did,” Benard told the AP when asked if he took steroids. “It was what it was. I did some stupid things. I should have never done them. At the time you think you’re doing the right thing for the right reason, then you realize you made a mistake and it’s too late and you can’t take it back.
  • Barry Bonds said he is “proud” of former rival Mark McGwire for admitting that he used performance-enhancing drugs. “I’m proud of what he did. I’m happy for him,” Bond said. Bonds also said that he does not have any plans at all to play again, but he adds, “it’s not necessary at the moment [to retire]. The timing isn’t that important.” (ESPN.com news servicesd)
  • David Ortiz is 2 for 18 (.111) for the season with nine strikeouts. Backup outfielder Jeremy Hermida is 3 for 8 and the Red Sox are trying to find ways to get him some at-bats. Those at-bats may be at the expense of Ortiz. Some say Ortiz could be used in a platoon with right handed hitting Mike Lowell. (Peter Abraham, The Boston Globe)
  • The Associated Press says that Seattle Mariner’s pitcher Cliff Lee looked ready to go after a 45 pitch bullpen session on Sunday.  Erik Bedard threw 45 pitches in his bullpen session and is scheduled to throw 55-60 pitches on Wednesday. Both Lee and Bedard felt no pain, but the team will take a more conservative approach on Bedard.
