PRO Rumors: Giants two-team doubleheader, Orioles closer, Jermaine Dye to replace Burrell?

By Allan

Here are a few late afternoon PRO Rumors:

  • The Giants and the Braves “discussed seriously” a possible make up game on Tuesday had their game today not have been played, according to Andrew Baggerly of the San Jose Mercury News. The Giants would have played the Pirates in the afternoon and the Braves at night. The last time (and maybe the only other time) this occurred, according to the Wikipedia, was on September 25, 2000 when the Cleveland Indians hosted the White Sox in the afternoon and the Minnesota Twins at night.
  • Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun says that pitcher Michael Gonzalez will not be the team’s closer until “he proves that he has corrected the mechanical flaws that have diminished his velocity.” The flaws resulted in a pair of blown saves.
  • Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times says that the Tampa Bay Rays should consider letting DH Pat Burrell go. The team owes Burrell $9 million for 2010 and Topkin says, “the Rays will just have to accept their mistake and cut him loose.” If the team does cut him loose, could Jermaine Dye’s phone be ringing shortly thereafter?
