Prince Fielder contract rumors: Seeking $200 million over eight years
ByJon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says that Mark Teixeira’s $180 million and Joe Mauer’s $184 million contracts are viewed as Prince Fielder’s starting points with $200 million over eight-years as the ideal contract for Fielder and his agent, Scott Boras.
Heyman adds that the chances of the Brewers keeping Fielder are “very slim,” and it is unlikely that he will take a below-market contract to stay in Milwaukee.
It is likely that Boras will up sell Fielder as a similar player to Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols rather than a Teixeira or Mauer meaning that the $200 million is the likely starting number for both sides.
Heyman suggests that the Mariners, Cubs, Giants, Dodgers and Mets could be candidates to sign Fielder if the Brewers cannot extend his contract before he becomes a free agent in 2011.
The 25-year-old first baseman has hit 160 career home runs, drove in 453 RBIs and has a lifetime batting average of .284. It’s to the Brewer’s advantage to sign him to a new contract as soon as possible, otherwise, if they cannot extend him they could get a good bounty of prospects if they trade him this year.
