Looking back at the history of franchises first no-hitters
ByUbaldo Jimenez
’s no hitter against he Atlanta Braves on Saturday gave the Rockies their first franchise no-hitter. Now that you can scratch the Rockies off the list, only three teams are left waiting for their first no-no: the Tampa Bay Rays, the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets.
Tom Singer of MLB.com mentions that despite only having 27 teams on the winning side of a no-hitter, all 30 Major League teams have been no-hit with the most frequent victims being the Padres seven times and the Mets six times.
Singer puts out a list of each of the franchises’ no-hitters. A few notable no-hitters include:
- Cy Young throwing the first no-hitter for the Boston Red Sox against the Athletics on May 5, 1904.
- Randy Johnson threw the first no-hitters for both the Seattle Mariner’s franchise (6/2/1990 vs the Tigers) and the Arizona Diamondback’s franchise (5/18/2004 which also happened to be a perfect game).
- The Reds have the oldest no-hitter of the active franchises – Nixey Callahan threw a no-no against the Phillies on July 12, 1900.
- The Red Sox (Indians, Twins and Yankees) and the Braves (Cardinals, D-Backs and Rockies) were each the victims of three franchises first no-hitters.
