LHP Scott Schoeneweis gets last Red Sox roster spot

By Allan

According to several news outlets, the Boston Red Sox have decided the final spot on their roster will go to veteran left-handed pitcher Scott Schoeneweis. Joe Nelson, the other possible candidate for the last roster spot was sent to Triple-A.

This trip to the Minors for Nelson could be his last since he’s out options. If he gets called up, he cannot be sent back down to the Minor Leagues unless he clears waivers.

Schoeneweis was released by the Brewers last week. In seven outings this Spring with the Brewers, Schoeneweis allowed seven hits, six runs in seven innings of work.

The 36-year-old pitcher was 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in 45 appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009. He will make $500,000 with the Red Sox. You can see Schoeneweis’ contract details and statistics here.
