Dioner Navarro has received a two-game suspension for bumping an umpire on Friday night. Because the Rays do not have a backup catcher (other catcher Kelly Shoppach already on DL), they have decided to option right-hander Mike Ekstrom to Triple-A Durham and recall catcher Jose Lobaton.
Navarro was ejected from Friday night’s Rays-Blue Jays game in the sixth inning after arguing with home-plate umpire Dan Bellino. Grant Balfour had just thrown ball two to Adam Lind to make the count 2-2 with no outs when Navarro began jawing and belly bumping with Bellino, prompting the ejection.
Manager Joe Maddon had initially indicated that utility man Sean Rodriguez would serve as the backup catcher should a suspension occur. Whether Navarro plans to appeal the suspension remains mystery. If Navarro begins serving his suspension today, he will miss two home games against the Oakland A’s.
