4/11 14:04: The San Francisco Giants incumbent catcher, Bengie Molina, is hitting .273 (3 for 11) with 0 walks and 0 extra-base hits. The team’s top prospect, Buster Posey, is hitting .538 at Triple-A Fresno. It makes you wonder when the Giants will call up their future to the Big Leagues.

In all fairness, it’s the beginning of the season, and .273 is not that bad. However, the Giants do expect more from Molina who has hit 19, 16 and 20 home runs respectively from 2007-2009. Molina provides tremendous value to the pitching staff which is contributing to the team’s 4-1 record.

The Giants have backup Eli Whiteside (hitting .143) who will likely be sent down to the Minors in the event Posey gets called up. Posey could spend time at first base, a position he played during Spring Training. If that occurs, players like Travis Ishikawa and Aubrey Huff will see their playing time decrease.

My gut feeling is that the team will hold Posey at Triple-A until this summer to keep his arbitration clock from ticking unless Ishikawa or Huff start to seriously slow down or get hurt. As much as the team wants Posey to be their catcher, I expect him to have more playing time in the infield at first.
