Rumors for April, 2010

Here are a few links to follow on Friday evening:

  • The Los Angeles Angels could trade catcher Mike Napoli. ESPN Los Angeles says that Napoli “might garner the most talent in return and moving him would save the angels $3.6 million in salary.” The Angels currently have three catchers on their roster: Napoli, Jeff Mathis and Bobby Wilson.
  • John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says that the agent of Oakland A’s catcher Kurt Suzuki has had no contact with the team regarding an extension to Suzuki’s contract, but the agent is open to hearing from the team.
  • Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com says that Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Lou Montanez is on his way to the West Coast to join the Orioles. Felix Pie was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left rotator cuff strain.

kendrickKen Kendrick, managing general partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, has quietly kept a passion that he has had since childhood: collecting baseball cards. Craig Harris of The Arizona Republic tells us that Kendrick has no ordinary collection, but rather an elite set of cards that includes the rarest of them all – a rare T206 1909 Honus Wagner card that was purchased in 2007 for $2.8 million.

For those unfamiliar with the card, or often time referred as the “Gretzky” Wagner, the little piece of cardboard is one of the rarest because it was pulled from production by the Hall of Fame shortstop Wagner. Wagner did not want to influence children to use tobacco in order to get his baseball card. Now only 50 to 60 of the cards remain, but the “Gretzky” Wagner (named after the hockey great Wayne Gretzky because in 1991 he purchased the card) has the highest quality of them all.

Kendrick has agreed to loan card and 24 others to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York so that thousands of fans could see them. His collection includes an Eddie Plank card from the same set, and rare and high quality cards of Hank Aaron, Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Jackie Robinson.

The idea of having these cards is not to keep them in a safe deposit box,” said Kendrick, who declined to disclose the set’s value. “It’s like art.”

Kendrick adds, “the difference between me and my buddies was, at the end of the day, I had a mom who kept all my cards.”

The cards will be on display for the next two years, but may return to Phoenix next summer when the Diamondbacks host the 2011 All-Star Game.

Chan Ho ParkAndy McCullough of The Star-Ledge says that Yankees have placed reliever Chan Ho Park on the 15-day disabled list due to a “real, real low-level” strain on his right hamstring. In his place, the team has called up Boone Logan from Triple-A Scranton.

“There’s a possibility that he would have pitched for us next week,” manager Joe Girardi said. “But you run your bullpen short and the other thing that you do is you take the chance of hurting it worse.”

Park will rest three or four days then get back to a workout routine. The right-hander experienced a hamstring injury last season, but he says the strain he has now is not in the same spot.

“At my age,” Park said. “You have to be very careful.”

Park, 36, is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 3 appearances with the Yankees this year. You can see Park’s career statistics here.

Matthew Clemens Phillies fanYou have to scratch your head and wonder what this guy was thinking. Matthew Clemmens, a 21-year-old from South Jersey, shoved his fingers down his throat and vomited on an 11-year-old daughter of an off-duty police officer. He then proceeded to slug the officer in the head several times.

“It was the most vile, disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” said Captain Michael Vangelo, the father of the 11 year-old girl, “and I’ve been a cop for 20 years.”

According to David Gambacorta of the Philadelphia Daily News, the final vomiting act came after several innings worth of “slurred curses, spilled beer and spit” that Clemmens and another man directed at Vangelo.

Clemmens and his accomplice were seated a row behind Vangelo and loudly cursed until the 15-year-old daughter asked them to stop.

“One guy started spitting . . . first it landed on the back of my daughter’s chair. Then it landed on her hooded sweatshirt.” Vangelo said that Clemmens then loudly stated that he was going to be sick. “He leaned over and put two fingers down his throat.”

Clemmens was charged with simple assault, aggravated assault, harassment, resisting arrest and related offenses. Bail is $12,000.

Scott Downs Toronto Blue JaysPaul Hagen of the Philadelphia Daily News says the Phillies had two scouts at the Rogers Centre in Toronto for a game earlier this week. He questions if the scouts were there to look at left-handed pitcher Scott Downs.

Downs is a free agent after this season and  he could be a Type B or possibly a Type A free agent meaning the Blue Jays will receive at least one draft pick and possibly two picks for him if they offered arbitration and lost him as a free agent. Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is not afraid of the risks associated with offering arbitration to players. The worst case is that Downs accepts arbitration and the Blue Jays will be forced to pay him a large salary for the next year.

In late March, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said that the Blue Jays will not settle for “fringe prospects” in return for Downs.

Downs, 34, is 0-0 in four appearances with the Blue Jays this season. He has not given up a run in 3 1/3 innings this season. You can see Down’s statistics here.

Mark McGwireDoes Fox Sports Midwest have something against steroid user Mark McGwire?  Or did they want to avoid embarassing the former slugger on TV?

Dan Caesar of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the broadcast cut to host Jim Hayes talking to Cardinal’s outfielder Joe Mather just as McGwire was stepping out of a truck and onto the field for the first time in front of the home-town crowd. The broadcast returned after McGwire’s introduction, leading some to believe there was a cover-up in case McGwire was booed.

FSM general manager Jack Donovan said it was a time issue with the broadcast. The ceremonies were at least five minutes behind schedule. Donovan adds that because of the delays, Fox Sports Midwest did not broadcast some commercials and costing them significant revenue.

“It was by far not perfect for us, but we’re covering a live event and at live events things happen,’’ Donovan said. “When you’ve got seven Hall of Famers (on the field) and jets flying over the stadium and ceremonial first pitches and celebrities singing the national anthem, everything got thrown out of whack…. We’re mildly amused that people jumped to the conspiracy thing because that is way out of a spy movie. It was nothing along those lines.’’

Yesterday, Rob Neyer of ESPN.com wrote an article and noted that he believed there was a 50/50 chance that the Cubs would release Alfonso Soriano before his $18mm a year contract is up after the 2014 season.

Today, Cubs GM Jim Hendry said on MLB Network Radio on SIRIUS XM that the Soriano speculation was just that speculation.  “Never been a thought to it,” Hendry told host Jim Memolo. “No. Those things are speculated by probably people in your profession, not ours.”

Soriano has seen his offensive numbers steadily decline over his years with the Cubs and plays an interesting left field as no fly balls are ever routine.  In the end, Soriano has to much money and years left on his contract to trade him and wouldn’t benefit the Cubs in releasing him either.
