Unemployed veteran predictions: Dye, Washburn, Blalock, Smoltz, Martinez, Anderson

By Allan

Peter Barzilai of USA Today talked about several unemployed veterans that are looking for a job. Here’s the skinny on Barzilai’s predictions:

  • Jermaine Dye: The San Francisco Giants could use the veteran outfielder if incumbant right-fielder Nate Schierholtz can’t prove he’s an everyday outfielder.
  • Jarrod Washburn: He’s been flirting with the Seattle Mariners all off-season. Barzilai says, “let’s just get it done.”
  • Hank Blalock: Blalock could be added to the Tampa Bay Rays as insurance for Pat Burrell, who is coming off a poor 2009. Blalock can also play first base if the teams decides to deal Carlos Pena.
  • John Smoltz: Smoltz could find his way back to Atlanta where the team is in need of the right-hander’s versatility.
  • Pedro Martinez: The Phillies rotation has some uncertainty and the team could use Martinez sometime during the season.
  • Garret Anderson: Barzilai suggests that Anderson is limited to swinging the bat, so he’ll probably be better of retiring.
