Ed Price of Fanhouse tweets that Rockies first baseman Todd Helton has agreed to a two-year extension with the club.
Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post says that the contract is a two-year, $9.9 million extension which will keep Helton under contract through 2013. A few contract stipulations includes deferral of $13.1 million beginning with the 2011 season and portions of his contract will be deferred beginning in 2014. Helton will make $4.9 million in 2012 and $5 million in 2013. The original contract was to be completed after next season.
Renck adds that Helton was scheduled to make $19.1 million in 2011. As part of this new deal, he will get $10.6 million — a $6 million salary and the $4.7 signing bonus which is essentially the conversion of the buyout of his old contract. So it saves the Rockies $8.4 million on next year’s payroll.
Helton, 36, hit .325 with 15 home runs and 86 RBIs with the Rockies in 2009. You can see Helton’s contract history and statistics here.
