PRO Rumors: Matsui, LaRoche, Dunn, Gallardo, Serrano

By Allan

Happy Wednesday! We’ll start your day right with a few PRO Rumors:

  • Despite not playing the outfield with the Yankees in 2009, Hideki Matsui is probably going to see defensive action this season. The Angels plan to use Matsui in occasional outfield relief according to Jim Peltz of The Los Angeles Times.
  • Adam LaRoche tries to clear up the confusion that came up when he reportedly turned down a two-year, $17.5 million offer from the San Francisco Giants. According to Nick Piecoro, LaRoche made a counteroffer to the Giants, but he did not hear back from them. “I don’t want San Francisco fans to think that the Giants were just dying to have me and stayed in contact with me all winter,” he said.
  • Adam Dunn is on the last year of a two-year deal with the Washington Nationals, and despite having more negotiating leverage by switching to a full-time DH, he has no plans to hang up the glove. “I know I don’t want to go DH, Dunn says. I like playing the field. DH-ing is awesome during interleague, because it gives you a little break. But I couldn’t do it full time. I won’t do it full time. You can write that out right now.” (Adam Kilgore, Washington Post)
  • Probable Opening Day starter Yovani Gallardo is the only unsigned player on the Milwaukee Brewers’ 40 man roster that is not signed. “I was the last one last year, too, so I’m not very worried about it,” the right-hander said. “I let my agent handle that. I’m sure they’ll get something figured out.” Gallardo is a “zero-to-three” player that does not make him eligible for salary arbitration due to lack of Major League service time. The Brewers can pay Gallardo the league minimum, but both sides will continue to negotiate to establish a good foundation for future talks when numbers can be a little more hairy. • According to Cubanballplayers.com, the Chicago Cubs may have signed Cuban right-handed pitcher Juan Yasser Serrano to a $250,000 contract. Serrano pitched for the Villa Clara Orangemen in the Cuban League.
