Pro Rumors: Gonzalez, Jeter, Hamilton and Free Agents

By Ryan

Here are a few stories for you to browse through as your eating your healthy lunch….

Jon Heyman of SI.com covered a variety of players and rumors in his latest post.

-Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez believes he will be shopped around at the up coming trade deadline.

Though Gonzalez has a very affordable contract through 2011, I see a big market team landing him come the trade deadline.  I think a small market team will worry about the size contract Gonzalez will be looking for when he becomes a free agent and will be sacred off.

-Heyman spoke to “two executives from competing teams”who believe Derek Jeter”could ask for a six-year deal.”  The idea is that a six-year extension would take Jeter to age 42, as Alex Rodriguez’s contract does.

The only issue I see with this is where would Jeter play at in the field.  I see Rodriguez moving to the DH spot as he is more of a pure hitter than Jeter is.  Maybe right field?

-Heyman notes that Josh Hamilton turned down a four-year, $24MM offer from the Rangers last year.  The contract would’ve provided security for Hamilton given his injury problems.

I expect Hamilton to have a big year.  Having Vladimir Guerrero in the line-up will allow him to see more hittable pitches.  The only question is can he stay healthy…..

-Heyman spoke to one executive who believes the availability of decent free agents such as Washburn, Dye, Beimel, Blalock and Martinez perhaps continuing into the season, could reduce trading.

- Heyman noted that one scout recently watched Carlos Santana of the Cleveland Indians and called him “another Victor Martinez.”

The Indians acquired Santana during the Casey Blake trade in 2008 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
