T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com talks about the Texas Rangers need for a utility infielder now that the team has voided Khalil Greene’s contract due to social anxiety disorder. Sullivan says Julio Lugo’s name has come up from within the Rangers’ organization.

Lugo, a utility infielder for the Cardinals, is expected to lose significant playing time with the Cardinals after the team signed infielder Felipe Lopez last week. The Cardinals may be willing to make Lugo available at some time during the Spring.

“Our goal is to see if we can find the right combination of guys to give [manager Ron Washington] the most options and flexibility,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Monday. “We’ve still got a half-dozen guys internally we’re looking at and our scouts are in town. That will be a focus as we see if there is an upgrade out there. It might be the guys in camp who are deserving of the job.”

If the Rangers decide to promote from within, candidates include Joaquin Arias, Ray Olmedo and Esteban German.

Lugo, 34, is career .271,.336,.391 batter. He was the starting shortstop on the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox, but some say he has lost some of his range. You can see Lugo’s contract history and statistics here.
