Reds interested in Gary Matthews Jr from Mets

By Allan

3/4 19:38: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer spoke to a Reds’ source who said the team has zero interest in Gary Matthews Jr. The source went so far as to name five outfielders the team has in camp that they’d take over the former Angel.

3/4 17:25: According to Buster Olney or ESPN The Magazine, the Cincinnati Reds have interest in acquiring Gary Matthews Jr. from the New York Mets in the event Angel Pagan wins the Met’s starting center field job.

If this were to occur, the trade will most likely include cash since Matthews has two years and $23 million owed to him plus a $500,000 bonus for being traded from the Angels.

Matthews and Pagan were competing for the starting center field position while Carlos Beltran is recovering from knee surgery.

Matthews, 35, was acquired by the Mets in January for right-handed pitcher Brian Stokes. Matthews hit .250 with 4 home runs and 50 RBIs in 103 games for the Angels in 2009. You can see Matthews Jr’s contract history and statistics here.
