Adrian Gonzalez Contract Rumors: Seeking Mark Teixeira money
By3/2 15:31: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says the Padres are thinking closer to Torii Hunter’s deal of five-years at $90 million.
3/2 15:08: Tim Sullivan of The Union-Tribune reports that San Diego Padres slugger Adrian Gonzalez is seeking Mark Teixeira money (eight-years, $180 million). Gonzalez’s agent John Boggs and Padres GM Jed Hoyer had preliminary discussions, but when the Teixeira numbers came up, it ended Hoyer’s exploration. Boggs said, “you couldn’t characterize it as a negotiation.”
Moorad told fans in early February, “while I’d be thrilled to have (Gonzalez be) part of the organization for the long term, the early signals indicate his cost will be greater than our ability to pay.”
The Padres have Gonzalez until the end of the 2011 season. If they can trade him this year, they can fetch a good bounty considering the new team will have him for the remainder of 2010 and the entire 2011 season.
Gonzalez hit .277 with 40 home runs and 99 RBIs in 2009 with the Padres. Gonzalez will be paid $4.75 million and $5.5 million in 2010 and 2011 respectively – a bargain given his stellar offense and defense. You can see Gonzalez’s statistics and contract history here.
