According to Mark J. Miller of Yahoo Sports, the New York Mets are after free agent catcher Rod Barajas.
Barajas’ name came up in rumors and discussions whenever other high profile backstops’ names came up such as Bengie Molina and Yorvit Torrealba. He has been mentioned with the Giants, Mets and Mariners this winter. Barajas hit .226 with 19 home runs and 71 RBIs with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009. Hall of Fame writer Murray Chass said that the Mets were having a hard time prioritizing their off season deals. They could not deal with more than one free agent at a time and were telling agents that they were interested in their client, but they needed to deal with other players first. This lead to agents shopping their clients to other teams even if the player wanted to play for New York.
