John Smoltz Rumors: Waiting until mid-season to play?
ByAccording to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, free agent pitcher John Smoltz is likely to follow the route that Pedro Martinez took a year ago with the Philadelphia Phillies and not sign a contract until mid-season.
Rubin’s source says, “I think he just does not think he (Smoltz) can do a whole year and stay healthy.” The Mets have been interested in Smoltz as recently as last month. However a Met’s official said, “We are pretty much done, but will stay in touch with some (free agents).”
Smoltz was 3-8 with a 6.35 ERA in 15 games with the Red Sox and Cardinals while making $5.5 million in 2009. You can see Smoltz’s contract history and statistics here.
