Atlanta Braves sign Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo

By Allan

According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the Atlanta Braves have signed Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo. Bowman broke the story last week that the Braves and Salcedo were close to a deal. Salcedo completed his physical today and it is believed that he will receive a signing bonus of approximately $1.6 million.

“This is a significant signing for us,” Braves director of international scouting operations Johnny Almaraz said. “We feel that Edward is one of this year’s most talented prospects. He has outstanding makeup, and the combination of his fielding and hitting ability make him one of the top international players that we’ve seen in a while.”

Salcedo had a $2.3 million agreement with the Cleveland Indians in 2007, but that deal was nullified when suspicions were raised on his date of birth. Major League Baseball has determined that Salcedo was born in 1991.
