Rumors for February, 2010

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Orioles may have some interest in free agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn, but that his “price would have to drop pretty far” in order for Baltimore to be in play for his services.

Morosi’s source also says that the Orioles are unlikely to add free agents Todd Wellemeyer, Braden Looper or John Smoltz.

Washburn is in no rush to sign a new contract. He would prefer to play for the Minnesota Twins or Seattle Mariners.

Washburn, 35, has a career 107-109 record with a 4.10 ERA and 1.301 WHIP.  He pitched for the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers last season where he made $10.35 million in the last year of a four year contract. You can see Jarrod Washburn’s contract history and statistics here.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that the Minnesota Twins have signed free agent outfielder Jacque Jones to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

Jones, 34, last played in the Major Leagues in 2008 when he played 42 games with the Detroit Tigers and Florida Marlins. He had his last good season with the Chicago Cubs in 2006 when he hit 27 home and drove in 81 RBIs in 2006. You can see Jones’ statistics here.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Baltimore Orioles have signed two left-handed relievers, Will Ohman and Will Startup.

Ohman, 32, was 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA in 21 appearances with the Dodgers in 2009. He has a career 11-9 record with a 4.25 ERA with the Cubs, Braves and Dodgers. You can see Ohman’s contract history and statistics here.

Startup, 25, has never pitched in the major leagues and was limited to only 11 appearances over the past two seasons.

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Milwaukee Brewers have signed left-handed pitcher Scott Schoeneweis to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

If Schoeneweis makes the big league roster he will make $800,000.

Schoeneweis, 35, was 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in 45 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009. You can see Schoeneweis’ contract history and statistics here.

According to Amanda Sidman of The New York Daily News, Yankees stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez appeared to avoid each other at Tao in Miami. The two were in town for the Super Bowl.

“A-Rod hung with Ingrid Casares and Guy Oseary, and Jeter was on the other side of the room with friends,” says the spy of the New York Daily News “There was literally no interaction between them.”

The two kept their distance at the Grey Goose and CAA party the following evening with Jeter keeping his distance from A-Rod’s table, which included the likes of Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Cameron Diaz.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post says that the Mets have money left over, and they can improve the team before Spring Training begins. Sherman says that the Mets were willing to give then free agents Bengie Molina and pitcher Joel Pineiro about $12 million, but the team could not close either deal. Therefore the team still has that money budgeted for the 2010 season and there are plenty of free agents left that they can sign for a bargain.

Among those that are available that the Mets can get are catcher Rod Barajas, first baseman Russell Branyan, reliever Kiko Calero, utilityman Felipe Lopez or starter Jarrod Washburn with the $12 million.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports writes that free agent pitcher Braden Looper will not settle for a Major League contrat with a low base salary or a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training.

Looper is planning on waiting on an opportunity that may come up from an injury, trade or poor performance. Free agents Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz may take the same strategy.

Looper, 35, was 14-7 with a 5.22 ERA in 34 games started in 2009 with the Milwaukee Brewers. Looper had a $4.75 million one-year contract last season. You can see Looper’s contract history and statistics here.
