Mets are close to a deal with Mike Jacobs

Update 2/10 05:04: Jerry Crasnick of ESPN says that Jacobs will receive an invitation to the Major League Spring Training on a non-guaranteed contract. Jacobs will compete for at-bats at first base or off the bench.
2/9: According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, the New York Mets are close to a Minor League deal with free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs.
Jacobs, 30, played in 128 games with the Kansas City Royals in 2009 where he hit .228 with 19 home runs and drove in 61 RBIs. He played with the Mets in 2005. You can see Jacobs’ contract history and statistics here.
Endy Chavez Rumors: Drawing interest from 5 clubs
Posted by: | CommentsFree agent outfielder Endy Chavez is drawing interest from the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.
Chavez is returning from major surgery on his right knee and coule be ready to play in May or perhaps April. Morosi says that Chavez could decide on two courses of action: sign with a club soon and rehabilitate with the team’s medical staff throughout Spring Training or continue his workouts individually and stage a showcase in late March.
Chavez, 32, hit .273 with 2 home runs and 13 RBIs in 54 games with the Seattle Mariners in 2009. You can see Chavez’s contract history and statistics here.
John Smoltz Rumors: Waiting until mid-season to play?
Posted by: | CommentsAccording to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, free agent pitcher John Smoltz is likely to follow the route that Pedro Martinez took a year ago with the Philadelphia Phillies and not sign a contract until mid-season.
Rubin’s source says, “I think he just does not think he (Smoltz) can do a whole year and stay healthy.” The Mets have been interested in Smoltz as recently as last month. However a Met’s official said, “We are pretty much done, but will stay in touch with some (free agents).”
Smoltz was 3-8 with a 6.35 ERA in 15 games with the Red Sox and Cardinals while making $5.5 million in 2009. You can see Smoltz’s contract history and statistics here.
New York Mets and Angel Pagan agree to 1 year contract
Posted by: | CommentsAccording to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, outfielder Angel Pagan and the New York Mets have avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.45 million contract. Pagan was seeking $1.8 million and the Mets were offering $1.275 million. The Mets have no more arbitration-eligible players.
Pagan, 28, hit .306 with 6 home runs and 32 RBIs in 2009 with the Mets. You can see Pagan’s contract history and statistics here.

Chien-Ming Wang Rumors: Dodgers, Mets and others interested in Wang
Posted by: | CommentsUpdate 15:13: Bill Ladson of MLB.com tweets that the Nationals are “aggressively pursuing” Wang. It is not known if the team has made an offer.
2/9 15:02: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that two unidentified clubs have made offers to free agent pitcher Chien-Ming Wang.
It has been known that the Dodgers are interested in Wang and the pitcher would have interest in reuniting with former Yankees manager Joe Torre in Los Angeles. The Mets are in need of a starting pitcher since they have not been able to sign one this off season.
Other possible teams that could use Wang include the Orioles, Nationals, Rays and Blue Jays. Rosenthal says that several teams have already given Wang a physical so once he agrees to a deal, that part of the process will be complete. Wang is expected to make a decision within 7 to 10 days.
