T.R. Sullivan talks about the Texas Ranger’s catching situation for the 2010 season in his latest article for MLB.com. Sullivan believes that the Rangers will bring in one or two catchers to prepare for the uncertainty of Jarrod Saltalamachia and to push youngster Taylor Teagarden.
Saltalamachia is recovering from right shoulder surgery and the Rangers would like to bring in a veteran catcher until he’s fully recovered. The club may not have confidence in Teagarden to take over everyday catching duties.
The Rangers have spoken with free agents Yorvit Torrealba and Rod Barajas, but both catchers want two year deals, and the team is not interested in more than one year. Other available free agent catchers include Josh Bard, Michael Barrett, Mike Redmond and Jose Molina.
Sullivan anticipates the new catcher will start until Saltalamacchia is ready with Teagarden as the backup. Once Saltalamacchia is ready, expect him and the new guy to share duties behind the plate with Teagarden back in the Minor Leagues.
