Rod Barajas Rumors: What's left of the catching market

By Allan

Now that Bengie Molina has signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, the free agent catching market only has Yorvit Torrealba and Rod Barajas left.

Torrealba has drawn interest from the Mets after Molina went with the Giants. Torrealba turned down a two-year $5.6 million offer from the Colorado Rockies earlier this Winter. It was believed as late as last week that the Giants and Torrealba had mutual interest in a one-year agreement.

If the Mets fill their catching needs with Torrealba, that will leave the Texas Rangers or Seattle Mariners as destinations where Barajas has a chance to be a starter. Earlier this month, the Rangers were expected to bring in one or two catchers to prepare for the uncertainty of Jarrod Saltalamachia and to push youngster Taylor Teagarden. Right now the Mariners have youngster Rob Johnson and veteran Josh Bard as their backstops. Barajas would bring in an overwhelming veteran presence behind the plate that would complement the M’s strong pitching staff.

Many other teams have a need for a backup catcher such as the Oakland A’s or New York Yankees, but Barajas is looking for a starting job.
