Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News reports on the Met’s and their plans for their starting catcher, adding another starting pitcher, Carlos Delgado and center field.
According to Rubin, manager Jerry Manuel said that Omir Santos will be the favorite to be the number one catcher unless the team adds a veteran backstop before Opening Day. It’s 50-50 whether they go with free agents Yorvit Torrealba or Rod Barajas.
The Mets are very likely to add another starting pitcher. They have been speaking with John Smoltz about a starting role. They have been mentioned in pursuing Ben Sheets and Jon Garland as well.
The Mets are continuing to actively scout Delgado, but his lack of range may be a liability. They have not ruled out signing him, but it’s not overly likely. This could open a door for Fernando Tatis to return.
Manuel is not ready to name the recently acquired Gary Matthews Jr. as the starting center fielder since Angel Pagan has been known to start seasons quickly.
