- Joe Frisaro of MLB.com says the Florida Marlins will explore a multi-year deal for Ricky Nolasco after 2010 if he has a strong season this year.
- Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com Tweets: Just talked to an NL exec who thinks Aroldis Chapman should start season in high A or Double A. “He’s not even close to ready.”
- Marlins president David Samson said in a radio interview that Dan Uggla will be the team’s Opening Day second baseman.
- According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Orioles are very comfortable letting the field of free-agent corner guys come to them, at their price, so if Miguel Tejada wants to return to Baltimore he would have to give them a discount.
- The Octavio Dotel deal should be made official later this afternoon. If so, then the Pirates will make a move, possibly a minor trade, to accommodate Dotel on the roster.
- Although no talks have been made according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the New York Mets may be interested in Arizona’s catcher Chris Snyder. You may recall that Snyder was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays in November only to have the trade canceled due to Toronto’s concern over Snyder’s back.
- Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Milwaukee Brewers signed Todd Coffey to a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. Coffey signed for 2,025,002. Coffey originally wanted $2.45 million and the Brewers offered $1.7 million.
- Jerry Crasnick of ESPN Tweets: I heard the Nats are looking for an affordable, “Livan Hernandez type” for rotation insurance. Hey, Livan Hernandez is still available.
- John Perrotto of BaseballProspectus.com Tweets: Former #Pirates RHP Denny Bautista signs a minor-league contract with the #Giants and is invited to major-league spring training.
- According to RotoWorld.com, the Kansas City Royals have signed OF Jamie Romak to a minor league contract.
