Colorado Rockies Rumors: Ricon, Contreras, Giambi, Tatis

By Allan

Troy Renck of the The Denver Post reports on a few needs for the Colorado Rockies before pitchers and catchers report in February.

  • The Rockies signed right-handed pitcher Juan Rincon to a minor-league deal in December and he’ll make $800,000 if he makes the big league roster.  He will receive an invitation to Spring Training, $20,000 per month while in the minor leagues, and can earn $175,000 in incentives for big league appearances, starting with $25,000 at 40 games and capping out at 70 games.  You can see Rincon’s complete stats here.
  • The Rockies are continuing to talk to Jose Contreras‘ agent.
  • Renck says that reliever Joe Beimel is a possibility to bolster the Rockies’ bullpen.
  • For the rotation, the Rockies have inquired about right-hander Tim Redding.  Redding was 3-6 with a 5.10 ERA with the Mets last season.  He started in 17 of the 30 games he played in.
  • The Rockies would like to bring Jason Giambi back.  Giambi will probably limited to pinch hitting duties and first base duties, however he’ll be third on the first baseman depth chart behind Todd Helton and Brad Hawpe.
  • The team is also looking at Robb Quinlan, Melvin Mora and Fernando Tatis to come off the bench.  All players have the ability to play multiple infield and outfield positions.
