The mystery relief pitcher that the Pittsburgh Pirates have been eying has been solved. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that the Pirates have reached a preliminary agreement with reliever Brendan Donnelly on a one-year contract for $1.5 million pending a physical. The deal includes performance bonuses that could increase the payout to $3 million.
It’s been speculated throughout the week that the Pirates were chasing after a third relief pitcher in addition to Octavio Dotel and D.J. Carrasco.
Donnelly, 38, had a record of 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA in 30 appearances while making $950,000 with the Florida Marlins in 2009. He’s also played for the Angels, Red Sox and Indians.
You can see Donnelly’s contract history and statistics here.

Most players that file for arbitration will get overlooked by the media. However, in two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum’s case, it won’t be overlooked. The reason is that the 25-year-old right-hander is expected to break the salary record of $10 million for a player in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
Lincecum is headed into uncharted territories with his contract. He’s considered a Super 2 in the arbitration-eligible world. This means that he has at least 2 years of Major League service time and less than 3 years of service time, and he falls within the top 17% of service time among those players between the 2 and 3 year mark. Got it? I created Salary Arbitration for Dummies just in case.
Lincecum and his agent will submit a salary figure to a three person panel. Additionally, the San Francisco Giants will submit a salary figure to the same panel. Unless a deal is agreed upon by both parties, they will all attend a hearing where each side will make a case regarding what Lincecum should be paid. Because of a “special provision” (aka winning back-to-back Cy Young’s) he’ll be compared to the big money pitchers such as teammate Barry Zito and C. C. Sabathia. Both Lincecum and Giant’s will want to settle this before it comes to a hearing since neither one will want to lose, and it may cause bad blood since both sides may have to bring up negatives of each other during the hearing. Hearings will be scheduled for February 1-21.
The Philadelphia Phillies Ryan Howard filed for $10 million and won. This was during his first year of arbitration-eligibility and one year removed from winning the National League MVP. The Phillies submitted $7 million for this case. Howard, and his agent Casey Close submitted an $18 million request before the 2009 season, but this was settled beforehand with a $54 million deal that lasts through the 2011 season.
It’s been speculated that Lincecum’s 2010 salary could reach $23 million – matching Sabathia’s salary. We will find out on Tuesday what the numbers from both sides become public. After everything is all said and done, the Giants and Lincecum will do this every year through the 2013 season when he’s about $75 million richer. At this time he can become a free agent and make the big bucks.

John Fay, Reds beat writer for the Enquirer, writes about the Reds today:
- The team hopes to wrap up a contract with arbitration-eligible player with Nick Masset and Jared Burton before it gets to an arbitrator. Right now the Reds are offering one-year deals to both players.
- Aroldis Chapman will arrive in Arizona next week to begin working out with pitching coach Bryan Price.
- Edinson Volquez has begun his throwing program in the Dominican and everything is going fine. Volquez had Tommy John surgery in 2009. It can take a year or more to recover from the surgery.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today Tweeted yesterday that Los Angeles Dodger’s manager Joe Torre will hang it up after the 2011 season. According to Nightengale, “at least that’s what he feels now.”
Bill Shaikin of the LA Times said last month that Dodger’s GM Ned Colletti is working on an extension for manager Joe Torre through 2011. Don Mattingly may be the heir apparent to Torre after he steps down from the managerial role. Torre’s three-year, $13 million contract will wrap up after the completion of the 2010 season.

The other day, it was reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates were going after a mystery relief pitcher. Today, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says that relievers Kevin Gregg and Tyler Walker could be crossed off the list.
At the time, suggestions included Jamey Wright, Kiko Calero, Brendan Donnelly, Seth McClung, Russ Springer and Chan Ho Park.
In the meantime, the team and Octavio Dotel are getting closer to a contract agreement. If it gets done, it’s likely that Dotel will be named the team’s closer. However, management see two closer candidates in Joel Hanrahan and Evan Meek.

Update 12:00: It’s official. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic Tweets that Byrnes has been designated for assignment.
Just following up on a rumor from yesterday. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says that once the Adam LaRoche deal becomes official, the Diamondbacks may need to make a roster move and the candidate to be dropped may be Eric Byrnes. Byrnes has one-year left on his three-year contract. He’s owed $11 million.
The plan is to have LaRoche at first and Conor Jackson will play left. The D-backs have the option to trade Byrnes, but ESPN says that the team wants to avoid the distraction of having Byrnes at Spring Training while he is being shopped.
