Reviewing Boone Logan, Mike Dunn & Arodys Vizcaino

By Allan

Here’s a quick rundown of the other players not named Javier Vazquez or Melky Cabrera that were included in today’s trade between the Yankees and the Braves. This is what went down earlier today:

Team Acquires
Yankees RHP Javier Vazquez
LHP Boone Logan
Braves OF Melky Cabrera
LHP Mike Dunn
RHP Arodys Vizcaino
$500K in cash

LHP Boone Logan: Logan has played in 164 games over four seasons with the Chicago White Sox and the Atlanta Braves.  He was acquired by the Braves in December 2008 in the same trade that brought Vazquez over.  In 2009 he split time between the big league club and the minors.  He played in 20 games with the Braves, was 1-1 and had a 5.19 ERA in 17 1/3 innings.

Logan will be a strong candidate to take the place of Phil Coke and come out of the Yankee’s bullpen in 2010 behind Demaso Marte.  He held left-handed hitters to .231 average.

LHP Mike Dunn:  Dunn was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 33rd round of the 2004 draft.  He made his big league debut in September 2009 where he pitched in 4 innings over 4 games.  He gave up 3 hits and 3 runs giving him an ERA of 6.75.

Jonathan Mayo, who covers the Minor Leagues for MLB.com, writes that Dunn would have most likely been the second lefty out of the Yankees bullpen for 2010.

Dunn has excellent command.  He has the ability to strike out players (9.4K/9 inning in his minor league career), but he also has the tendency to walk players (4 BB/9 innings in the minors).  His fastball tops out at 97 mph and he has a slider that he throws up to 91 mph.  He has the potential to be with the big league club coming out of Spring Training.

RHP Arodys Vizcaino:  Vizcaino, 19, just completed his second season in the Minor Leagues.   In his two year career, he has a 5-6 record, 2.92 ERA over 22 games (16 were games started).  He had a 11.1K/9 inning ratio in 2009, so he has the ability to strike players out.  He was recently rated as the top pitching prospect in the Yankees’ organization.

His fastball can reach 96 mph.  Vizcaino has an excellent curveball and power breaking pitch.  He needs to develop his change up, but that should occur over time.  Mayo classified Vizcaino as a high-end rotation prospect with a ton of upside.
