Red Sox to trade Buchholz for Padres' Gonzalez?

By Allan

Update 12/19 14:29 PST: Corey Brock, MLB.com writer for the Padres, Tweets: “Hoyer and the #Padres won’t never say never (to a AG deal). But I get the sense it will take a monster deal to move him. Don’t count on it.”

Update 12/17 08:24am PST:  The Boston Herald reports, “According to multiple major league sources, the Red Sox are unlikely to acquire San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez before the season.”  All of the rumors associated with the trade are ““an overstatement”, and “way premature”, according to the same sources.

The Boston Herald goes on to say that new San Diego general manager Jed Hoyer risks too much by trading Gonzalez as his first move.  He stands a chance of alienating the Padres’ fan base if the team does not get enough back in return from the Red Sox, Hoyer’s former employer.

Update 11:54am PSTGordon Edes, ESPNBoston.com Red Sox reporter, Tweets: Red Sox know what it would take to get Gonzalez, and they’re not trading Buchholz and Ellsbury, baseball source tells me. SD asking a ton.

Update 12/16 09:51am PST: Jorge Arangure of ESPN Tweets:  “Source close to A Gonzalez believes he’ll be traded to Red Sox within next 10 days.Does this mean deal will happen? No.But momentum is there”

Update 12/15 10:12am PSTJon Heyman of SI.com Tweets: “wondering if clay buchholz could be a trading chip now that lackey’s coming to boston. adrian gonzalez still a boston target”.  MLBSecrets will let you know if this trade continues to develop.

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports that the Boston Red Sox have flexibility in trading RHP  Clay Buchholz to the Padres for power hitting first baseman Adrian GonzalezKevin Youkalis would move from first to third to take the place of Mike Lowell (who currently is in trade limbo with the Rangers pending the status of his thumb).  They would then use a platoon of Mike Cameron and Jeremy Herminda in left field and therefore removing them from any potentials trades/signings of Adrian Beltre, Matt Holliday or Jason Bay.

We reported earlier today that the Padres are asking for Clay Buchholz and RHP prospect Casey Kelly or outfielder Ryan Westmoreland.  For the time being the Red Sox are not willing to give up Kelly or Westmoreland.  You can read that article here.
