New York Mets Rumors: Jason Bay and Bengie Molina

By Allan

There hasn’t been any updates between the New York Mets and Jason Bay or Bengie Molina despite the team offering contracts to both players at the end of the Winter Meetings almost two weeks ago.

  • This is leading some within the club to wonder if either player is interested in coming to New York.
  • The holdup for both players is their demand for an extra year.  Bay wants a fifth year added to the Met’s four-year $65 million offer, while Molina wants a third year on top of the Met’s two-year $12 million offer.
  • Met’s GM Omar Minaya has indicated a willingness to wait on both players, telling The Post late last week, “It is a long off season.”
  • A team source said yesterday that Minaya may soon consider other left field and catcher options if Bay and Molina continue to give the Mets the cold shoulder.
  • Other options for the Mets in left field include Matt Holliday (he may be too expensive for the Mets), Johnny Damon (he has great power, but his 24 home runs may be inflated due to Yankee Stadium) and Jonny Gomes.
