Giants pursuing veteran catchers & first baseman – no need for 3B in Uggla or Beltre

By Allan

According to Jon Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giant’s management have agreed that Buster Posey will not be the starting catcher on Opening Day 2010.  Rather they need are in search of a veteran catcher that will bridge the gap and provide the mentoring that Posey needs.   The Giants have been rumored to be going after Brad Ausmus, Yorvit Torrealba, Jason Kendall and Miguel Olivo.  General Manager Brian Sabean was critical of the 2 year, $6 million signing of Ivan Rodriguez by the Washington Nationals.  Rodriguez’s 2 year deal provides leverage for the remaining free agent catchers to ask for and get 2 year deals.

Shea goes on to explain that Pablo Sandoval will start at third base which means that rumors of the Giant’s pursuit of Dan Uggla or Adrian Beltre can be nixed.  The Giant’s may go after a free agent first basemen in Nick Johnson, Mark DeRosa or Adam LaRoche.

Andrew Baggerly of the San Jose Mercury News mentions that the agent of Juan Uribe may revisit the Giant’s offer of 1 year plus an option that was presented to Uribe last week.  Uribe batted .289 with 16 home runs in 120 games with the 2009 Giants.  Uribe wants a starting role, and wants to be paid like one.  The Giants will have a crowded infield with Freddy Sanchez at 2B, Edgar Renteria and his $9 million salary at shortstop and power hitting 3B Pablo Sandoval.  Uribe may be better off signing elsewhere if he wants the salary and the playing time.
