Bengie Molina Secrets: What is the Met's alternative?

By Allan

Yesterday, Jon Heyman of SI.com reported that free agent catcher Bengie Molina and the Mets are at a standstill.  Molina wants a 3-year, ~$20 million deal.  The Mets want to give Molina a 2-year, around $10 million deal.  Today, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports questions the alternatives for both Molina and the Mets.  Molina, one hand, should not expect a 3-year contract at the age of 35.  Whereas the Mets may not be able to find a better catcher available via free agency or trade.  You can see Bengie Molina’s complete statistics here.

The Mets currently have four catchers on their 40-man roster:  Henry Blanco, Chris Coste, Omir Santos and Josh Thole.  Molina would be a significant upgrade.  Rosenthal suggests a trade for the Diamondbacks’ Chris Snyder, but the two clubs are not in active discussions. Other possibilities include free agents Miguel Olivo and Rod Barajas.  MLBSecrets has not heard much from Brad Ausmus‘ camp.  He was mentioned last week as a target of the Dodgers or Giants.

It is believed that free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba is being considered by New York, but Rosenthal says the Mets are not too high on him.  Torrealba and the Colorada Rockies tried to workout a two-year deal.
