Backup catcher Chris Coste signs with Mets
ByThe Forum of Fargo-Moorhead has reported that catcher Chris Coste has signed a 1 year deal with the New York Mets. The deal includes a guarantee that Coste will be on the Met’s 40 man roster but not necessarily on the Opening Day roster. This guarantee and the intensity that the Met’s fans bring to the park were Coste’s deciding factors in signing.
The Met’s have Omir Santos as the starting catcher and Josh Thole as the backup. Coste, 36, goes on to say that he expects the Met’s to bring in at least one more, and possibly 2 more catchers into Spring Training.
Coste rose to fame as a 33 year old rookie as told in his book, The 33-Year-Old Rookie: My 13-Year Journey from the Minor Leagues to the World Series. This is one of my favorite reads since it details the story of a guy who didn’t give up despite the ups and downs as he followed his dream. I highly recommend this book for those hard working determined individuals who need an additional source of inspiration as they chase their dream.

Coste hit .224 with 2 home runs with the Houston Astros in 2009. He won’t bring a heavy plate presence, but pitchers such as Cole Hamels and Jaime Moyer have praised him for his ability to call games. Coste probably signed for no more than $500,000 so he gives the Met’s a nice bargain find especially with his experience with NL East batters.
