San Francisco Giants Rumors: Looking to add a bat
Posted by: | CommentsKen Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that the San Francisco Giants are looking to add some pop to their line up and Jason Bay and Matt Holliday are not out of the question.
- “I wouldn’t say it’s impossible,” said one source with knowledge of the team’s thinking, “but let’s see how everything unfolds.”
- The Giants believe Holliday and Bay will receive more attractive offers (so far 8-years/~$128 million from Cardinals and 4-years/~$65 million from Mets respectively). Instead the Giants may want to distribute the money to several players rather than put all their eggs in just one basket.
- Defense remains a priority, so Adrian Beltre may be a logical fit. Also on the Giant’s wish list: a catcher, fifth starter and a big bat.

Washington Nationals to sign Jason Marquis
Posted by: | CommentsUpdate 12/22 10:48am PST: The Washington Post reports today that Washington Nationals GM, Mike Rizzo, originallly wanted free agent right-hander John Garland instead of Jason Marquis, who they agreed to a two-year deal with on Monday. The report says that Garland hedged on a deal and prefers a West Coast team.
I wonder which team on the West Coast interested Garland? This original preference hopefully won’t leave a sour taste in Marquis’ mouth.
Update 12:30 PST: Mark Feinsand of The NY Daily News Tweets: Jason Marquis signs two-year, $15 million deal with Nationals. Cross another pitcher off the Yankees’ potential list.
Update 12:03 PST: Jon Heyman of SI Tweets: by signing with nationals (via MASN), jason marquis’ 10-year streak of playing for playoff teams will be tested
MASN reports that the Washington Nationals will sign Jason Marquis. The signing of Marquis probably means that free agent pitchers Jon Garland and Doug Davis will not sign with the Nationals.

Oakland A's Rumors: Both Cust and Crisp?
Posted by: | CommentsThe A’s are currently in the process of signing free agent Coco Crisp to a one-year deal for about $4.5 million with a team option. It should finalize today. Now the Athletics have their site on another outfielder/DH: Jack Cust.
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that the A’s have the payroll flexibility re-sign Jack Cust, but they need to act quickly since Cust has 2-3 offers on the table and is being targeted by several other teams including the Tigers, Royals, Giants and Rangers.

Aaron Harang Rumors: Deal not dead with Dodgers?
Posted by: | CommentsJeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the rumored Aaron Harang trade to the Dodgers is NOT dead.
- Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reported last week that the Aaron Harang trade from the Reds to the Dodgers was “apparently all but dead”.
- The Reds want Dodger’s reliever George Sherrill and a “prospect of some merit”.
- The Reds are willing to eat nearly $10 million of Harang’s $14 million salary.
- Sherrill should earn about $4.3 million in arbitration, and may be used by the Reds as trade bait for another team willing to give up prospects.

Colorado Rockies Rumors: New deal for Carlos Gonzalez
Posted by: | CommentsPatrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports on the Colorado Rockies strategy for staying competitive while not having to open up their wallets too wide.
- The Rockies’ success recipe is based on locking up their young, talented, promising players to sensible, preplanned deals such as the three-year, $8.3 million deal with catcher Chris Iannetta.
- Young outfielder Carlos Gonzalez should be next in line to receive a long term deal.
- Gonzalez may not get a deal similar to Troy Tulowitzki’s six-year, $31 million deal with a $15 million club option in 2014, but Gonzalez should secure a nice package.
- Gonzalez hit .320 with a .608 slugging percentage in the second half of 2009 with 11 home runs in his final 44 games.
- The Rockies have had a history of being proactive in signing their young and talented players such as Ubaldo Jimenez, Manuel Corpas, Brad Hawpe, Aaron Cook and Jeff Francis so they should do the same for Carlos Gonzalez.

New York Yankees Rumors: Top 9 trade acquisition candidates
Posted by: | CommentsMark Feinsand of the New York Daily News writes about the possible players that may be involved in the rumored trade the Yankees are working on right now. Currently, there has been chatter about the Yankees trading for a starting pitcher. The team and player have not been identified. It was expected that a trade announcement could have occurred late this evening.
Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins
- The Marlins have publicly and privately indicated that they do not intend to deal Johnson.
- The Yankees would need to package Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain with Jesus Montero, then probably another prospect or two to get Johnson.
- You can see Josh Johnson’s contract and statistics history here.
Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs
- The Yankees supposedly contacted the Cubs about Zambrano, but he has a no-trade clause.
- Zambrano’s agent has yet to be contacted.
- The Cubs are in need of an outfielder so they may seek Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner.
- You can see Carlos Zambrano’s contract and statistic history here.
Ted Lilly, Chicago Cubs
- The Yankees have the budget to pay for Lilly’s $12 million salary in 2010.
- Dealing Cabrera or Gardner with a mid-level prospect may get this done.
- You can see Ted Lilly’s contract and statistic history here.
Roy Oswalt, Houston Astros
- Oswalt will be expensive with $33 million due to him over the next 2 years.
- He spent his entire career in the National League, so it may be a gamble to bring him to the Yankees.
- You can see Roy Oswalt’s contract and statistic history here.
Derek Lowe, Atlanta Braves
- The trade the Yankees are working on is not supposed to be a salary dump, so Lowe may not be a candidate.
- Lowe is making $45 million over the next three years, so he’ll be expensive.
- You can see Derek Lowe’s contract and statistic history here.
Javier Vazquez, Atlanta Braves
- Vasquez is owed $11.5 million this season before becoming a free agent.
- The Braves would require a decent return – possibly a Nick Swisher or good prospects.
- You can see Javier Vazquez’s contract and statistic history here.
Bronson Arroyo/Aaron Harang, Cincinnati Reds
- Harang is due $12.5 million plus a $2 million buyout for his 2011 option.
- Arroyo is due $11 million plus a $2 million buyout for this 2011 option.
- Feinsand suggestions that if the Yankees are going to spend this much, they might as well go the free agent route and gamble with injured pitchers Ben Sheets or Justin Duchscherer.
- You can see Aaron Harang’s contract details and statistic history here.
- You can see Bronson Arroyo’s contract details and statistic history here.
Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondbacks
- Injured most of 2009 with shoulder surgery.
- Webb will be motivated by his pending free agency in 2011, so he would be a good gamble. But will he make it through the 2010 season?
- You can see Brandon Webb’s contract details and statistic history here.
Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners
- Feinsand says that if Yankees GM Brian Cashman can pull this one off, he deserves a five year extension.

- ESPN.com goes to say that since the Tigers traded Curtis Granderson to the Yankees, it isn’t clear who will be covering center field for Detroit.
- Their best outfield prospect, Wilkin Ramirez is not the answer for 2010.
- Podsednik has been mentioned with the Tigers, Cubs, Royals and Giants.
