Rumors for December, 2009

Update 12/21 10:55 PST: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Oakland Athletics will sign Coco Crisp to a one-year deal for about $4.5 million that includes a team option.

  • The deal should be completed on Monday or Tuesday pending a physical.
  • Rajai Davis’, the A’s incumbent center fielder might have to shift to a corner-outfield spot.  “That’s OK, as long as I’m out there,” Davis said.
  • Ryan Sweeney will retain the other corner outfield spot, but Scott Hairston may be potential trade bait or have to sit the bench as the fourth outfielder or DH.
  • A’s GM Billy Bean has tried to pursue Crisp twice before.

12/20 12:51 PST: ESPN.com reports that Coco Crisp is on the verge of signing a contract with the Oakland Athletics.

There hasn’t been any updates between the New York Mets and Jason Bay or Bengie Molina despite the team offering contracts to both players at the end of the Winter Meetings almost two weeks ago.

  • This is leading some within the club to wonder if either player is interested in coming to New York.
  • The holdup for both players is their demand for an extra year.  Bay wants a fifth year added to the Met’s four-year $65 million offer, while Molina wants a third year on top of the Met’s two-year $12 million offer.
  • Met’s GM Omar Minaya has indicated a willingness to wait on both players, telling The Post late last week, “It is a long off season.”
  • A team source said yesterday that Minaya may soon consider other left field and catcher options if Bay and Molina continue to give the Mets the cold shoulder.
  • Other options for the Mets in left field include Matt Holliday (he may be too expensive for the Mets), Johnny Damon (he has great power, but his 24 home runs may be inflated due to Yankee Stadium) and Jonny Gomes.
  • You can see Jason Bay’s statistics here.
  • You can see Bengie Molina’s statistics here.

  • Shoppach was given a $1.95 million contract last year in his first year of arbitration eligibility.  He was due to receive a raise in this year’s salary arbitration.
  • The other player the Indians considered to be the player to be named later was RHP Joseph Cruz.
  • Talbot was named Triple-A Charlotte Pitcher of the Year in 2007 and 2008.  He owns a 62-54 record and 3.79 ERA in 165 start in his Minor League career.

Update 12/21 09:33: Lyle Spencer of MLB.com Tweets:  Darren Oliver made a family decision signing with Texas. He lives in Dallas area and wanted to be with his wife and kids.

Update 12/21 09:13: MLB.com reports that the Rangers have reached a tentative agreement with left-handed reliever Darren Oliver on a one-year deal for 2010 plus a vesting option for 2011.

  • The Rangers have not confirmed that signing
  • The deal is pending a physical which is scheduled for Tuesday.
  • Oliver will receive $3.5 million in 2010.

12/20 18:30: ESPN.com reports that relief pitcher Darren Oliver is in contract discussions with the Texas Rangers:

  • Agreement could be in place early this week.
  • Third tour of Texas for Darren Oliver (the first being in 1993 and the last being in 2000-2001).
  • Career records of 106-83 in 16 seasons with Texas, St. Louis, Boston, Colorado, Flordia, Houston, Mets and Angels.
  • Angels, Mariners and Yankees were rumored to be interested in Oliver this off season.
  • Since the Angels did not offer Oliver arbitration, the Rangers will not owe the Angels draft pick c0mpensation in exchange for signing him.
  • You can see Darren Oliver’s contract history and statistic information here.

Update 09:07am PST: We goofed on the numbers.  The Marlins offered a five-year offer worth $13 million total – not annually.  Please forgive us.  =)

MLB.com reports that Aroldis Chapman, the 6′4″ 21-year-old left hander from Cuba has received an offer from the Florida Marlins:

  • The Marlin’s offer is a five-year contract worth $13 million annually ($65 million).
  • Chapman worked out for 50 scouts last week in Houston during an open throwing session setup by his agent where he threw 40-50 pitches in sneakers and off of a wooden mound and topped out at 97 mph.
  • He has been clocked as high as 102mph at last year’s World Baseball Classic.
  • The Marlin’s offer trumps the Red Sox offer of $15.5 million a couple of weeks ago.
  • The large Cuban population in South Florida would project to be be a major attraction in the market.
  • The lefty is expected to open the season at Double-A regardless of which team he signs with.  However, league officials indicate that he’s very close to being big league ready.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports on the Atlants Braves’ interest in trading for the Florida Marlin’s Dan Uggla.

  • The Braves need a bat and may trade for Marlin’s second baseman Uggla and move him to left field.  Martin Prado is currently playing second base for the Braves.
  • Uggla’s agent, Jeff Borris, told Yahoo!, that “there should be no reason to consider a position change at this time.  It’s a tough subject.  I don’t know.  We’ll have to wait and see.”
  • The talks between the Braves and Marlins describe Atlanta’s interest as “mild”.
  • Uggla, 29, will make between $7-8 million in arbitration.
  • The Marlin’s talks with the Giants about Uggla are “on-again, off-again” and the Baltimore Orioles are out now that they signed free agent Garrett Atkins.
  • A trade for the Yankee’s Nick Swisher or signing of free-agent left fielder Johnny Damon may be prefereable to the Braves.  If the Yankees trade Swisher then they may continue to pursue Damon for outfield and designated hitter duties.
  • Damon lives in Orlando, the site of the Braves’ Spring Training home.
  • You can see Uggla’s complete contract details and statistics here.

According to Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times, they suggest that the Seattle Mariners may be bringing back Erik Bedard:

  • Nobody knows when Bedard can pitch in a Major League game.  Some speculate it could be May 2010.  Some say he won’t be ready the entire first half of the season.
  • The Mariner’s trainer, Rick Griffin was quoted, “He’s going into therapy three or four times a week, and he’s working out at home. I talked to him, and he said he feels really, really good. He’s making good progress.”
  • Any offers to Bedard are likely to be loaded with incentives, much more so than what Rich Harden received from the Rangers.
  • The Mariners are expected to make their five-man rotation assuming that Bedard will not be apart of it.  If Bedard shows signs of recovering you can expect teams to start bidding on him come April.
  • Yahoo via The Sporting News indicates that the Orioles and Royals also have expressed interest in Bedard.
  • You can see Bedard’s statistics here.

Years from now the Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee trade could be taken at the face value as it is today, or it can even larger.  We already know that Halladay and Lee are studs, winners and first class athletes.  What we don’t know are the contributions of the seven prospects that were involved in this deal and what they will provide to their new team.  I’ve dubbed the prospect the Halladay-Lee Seven (an homage to The Oceanic Six of the tv show Lost).

Phillies acquisitions

OF Tyson Gillies (from Mariners): The 21-year-old outfielder from Canada.  His speed is “game-changing”.  Gillies is known as a line drive hitter.  He’s been compared to Shane Victorino, Dave Roberts and Juan Pierre.

RHP Phillipe Aumont (from Mariners): The 20-year-old from Canada is a 6-foot-7, 220-pound right-hander that is known to throw in mid-90’s.  Great fastball and there’s potential in his curve ball.  Some think he can be a major league reliever next season.

RHP Juan Ramirez (from Marineres): The 21-year-old right-hander is 6-foot-3, 175 pounds.  He has good velocity, but is inconsistent in his pitches.  His fastball touches in the mid-90’s.  Ramirez is a starter in the minors, but he may reliever in the big leageus.

Blue Jay’s acquisitions

C Travis d’Arnaud (from Phillies): The 20-year-old catcher was thought to be coveted by the Blue Jays in the 2007 amateur draft, but they failed to get him.  d’Arnaud has an above average arm behind the plate, and regularly guns down players leaning too far off first base or stealing second.  His defense is ahead of his offense, but he is known to be a very good contact hitter.

RHP Kyle Drabek (from Phillies): The son of former Cy Young Award winner and Pittsburgh Pirate, Doug Drabek.  The 22-year old right-hander Drabek was an Aflac, USA Today and Louisville Slugger All American as a pitcher and shortstop in high school.  In 2007, Drabek underwent Tommy John surgery.  Drabek features a dominant curve ball, an above-average fastball and projects as an innings-eating No. 2 starter. He also throws a changeup that needs work. Some think he might be ready to debut in the majors late in 2010.

3B Brett Wallace (from Athletics): The 23-year-old is 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds.  He’s a big guy that bats cleanup in the minors.  Wallace has good plate discipline and can hit for average and power.   He’s almost ready for the majors.  He was sent to Oakland from St. Louis as part of the Matt Holliday trade in July.

Athletic’s acquisition

OF Michael Taylor (from Phillies via Blue Jays):   The 24-year-old is 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds.  He’s a hardworking and intelligent ballplayer who consistently studies the pitchers that he faces.  Taylor is a very athletic and strong individual.  He’s been known for his strong throwing up arm, physical strength and decent speed, but he’s erratic and inconsistent at times.  He’s an older prospect.  He’s been classified as a Hunter Pence or Mike Cameron.

The San Francsico Chronicle reports that the city of San Francisco is threatening to sue Major League Baseball if it approves the Oakland Athletics move to San Jose, CA.

  • The city has a financial interest in the San Francisco Giants, including $3.6 million in annual rent the Giants pay for AT&T Park and its nearby parking lot.  The city also collects money to pay down the $16.6 million in bonds the city issued to pay for public improvements around the park.  The city also gets tax revenues from sales of tickets, concessions, souvenirs, parking, etc.
  • The Giants have the territorial right to San Jose, and moving a team like the Oakland Athletics into that area would undercut the Giant’s fan base and revenue.
  • “The city and county of San Francisco has a vital interest in making sure the Giants are successful and viable so they can make good on their obligations to the city.”
  • An attempt by the A’s to move from Oakland to Fremont fell through in February after the real estate market collapsed and local officials, residents and environmentalists opposed the development.
  • MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and the Oakland Athletics are researching potential site for the A’s to move including the possibility of the A’s moving to Fremont or San Jose.
