Cubs want to trade Bradley for Blue Jay's Wells

By Allan

According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Chicago Cubs would like to deal outfielder Milton Bradley for Blue Jay’s center fielder Vernon Wells.   Bradley still has two years and $21M left on his contract.  Wells has six years, $107M remaining, including the $8.5M final installment of his signing bonus which is due in March.

The Cubs idea is to split the difference – Well’s $107M and Bradley’s $21M for a difference of $86M.  Each team absorbs $43M.  This is not a bad idea given that Toronto doesn’t want to pay any more to Wells and in doing so, they’ll take the troublemaker Bradley for a couple of years.  However, if this deal does not go through, the motivated Cubs can look to other teams with expensive contracts such as the Giants’ Barry Zito (4 years remaining at $83M), the Giants’ Aaron Rowand (3 years remaining at $36M), the Indians’ Travis Hafner (3 years remaining at $40.25M), the Dodgers’ Juan Pierre (2 years remaining at $18.5M), and Tampa Bays’ Pat Burrell (1 year at $7M).
