Rumors for November, 2009

Manny Ramirez has decided to exercise his 2010 player option for $20 million.  Given that Ramirez batted .290 hit 19 home runs and 63 RBIs in a shortened season will not give him the leverage to command a better deal.  Last year it took Ramirez 4 months to decide what he would do, but it took it almost no time to decide this year.  It’ll be interesting to see what he can fetch starting in 2011.  Ramirez will be 38 for the start of the 2011 season, so he can expect to see a 3-4 year contract offer depending on his output next.  Barry Bonds was able to fetch high dollar value $18-22 million in the last years of his career, but that was because he could put people in the seats to watch him chase Mays, Ruth and Aaron.  Although Ramirez will be in the 600 homerun club, don’t expect him to draw sold out stadiums in 2011 or beyond.

Two days after the Philadelphia Phillies lost the World Series to the New York Yankees, they have already started to focus in on the 2010 season by picking up Cliff Lee’s team option.  The team option is worth $9 million for the 2010 season.  Not a bad signing given that Lee was a key piece to their 2009 NL Pennant.  Picking up the option allows the Phillies more time to negotiate an extension to keep Lee, 31, in a Phillies uniform for some time.  The $9 million price tag is comparatively cheap compared to former teammate C.C. Sabathia’s $14 million pay check he earned for 2009.  Expect the contract extension to propel Lee into a top 5 paid pitcher.

According to MLB.com, Brett Myers, Pedro Martinez and Miguel Cairo filed for free agency on Friday.  It also is not clear how the Phillies will handle Pedro Feliz’s $5.5 million club option for 2010.

Brewers trade Hardy for Gomez

Posted by: Allan | Comments View Comments

According to ESPN.com, center fielder Carlos Gomez has been traded from the Minnesota Twins to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for shortstop J.J. Hardy.

The trade of Hardy allows highly touted Alcides Escoba be the starting shortstop for the Brewers in 2010.

The trade for Gomez indicates that the Brewers will probably not re-sign free agent Mike Cameron who made $10 million dollars as the Brewers center fielder.

ESPN also mentions that the trade will relieve the surplus of crowded outfielders the Twins have, including Michael Cuddyer, Denard Span and Delmon Young.

The Red Sox also outrighted right-handed pitcher Fernando Cabrera outfielder Joey Gathright and infielder Nick Green to Pawtucket.

The OC Register reports that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim wasted no time in re-signing outfielder Bobby Abreu to a 2 year $19 million contract.  The contract will pay him $9 million in 2010 and 2011 with a team option for 2012 at $9 million.  If the Angels choose to not exercise the contract, there is a $1 million buyout.  This contract was accepted after Abreu rejected a 2 year $16 million contract offered in mid October.

The quick signing of Abreu is a change from last years poor market conditions.  Abreu was offered 2 year $16 million by the Tampa Bay Rays, only to reject it.  He then signed with the Angels later that winter for $5 million plus $1 million in incentives.

Abreu, 35, scored 96 runs, hit .293, had 15 home runs, 103 RBIs, 30 stolen bases, and a .390 on-base percentage in 152 games.

Angels General Manager, Tony Reagins still has some work cut out for him this off season.  On his to-do list for 2010 include free agents John Lackey, Darren Oliver, Vladimir Guerrero, Chone Figgins, Robb Quinlan and Kelvim Escobar.  Teams have 15 days after the World Series to conduct exclusive negotiations with their free agents.

MLB Secrets would like to congratulate the New York Yankees in winning their 27th World Series Championship.  The $201 million investment in their 2009 roster paid off.  C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett can sleep in peace knowing that they accomplished what they were paid to do.  Congrats to the 4 horsemen of the Yankees who have 5 rings – Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettite.

Yankee’s GM Brian Cashman has some work to do with potential free agents Jose Molina, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Jerry Hairston Jr., Andy Pettite, Eric Hinske and the injured Xavier Nady.  Who will stay?  Who will go?  Who will be their replacement?

Vegas already has the Yankees as 3/1 favorites to win the 2010 World Series with Boston and Philadelphia at 13/2.  I can’t wait.

A good guess will place the Twin’s payroll at $85-90 million, explains Twin’s beat writer Kelly Thesier.  With the opening of their new outdoor ballpark – Target Field, you can expect the Twins to add a new name or two on top of their already potent lineup, possibly an infielder or starting pitcher.  The Twins already have $62 million committed for 2010, but a few of their players should expect a pay raise such as Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer and Scott Baker.  This is in addition to 8 players who are arbitration eligible.

Thesier also mentions that the Twins are expected to work on a contract extension for Mauer.

According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Chicago Cubs would like to deal outfielder Milton Bradley for Blue Jay’s center fielder Vernon Wells.   Bradley still has two years and $21M left on his contract.  Wells has six years, $107M remaining, including the $8.5M final installment of his signing bonus which is due in March.

The Cubs idea is to split the difference – Well’s $107M and Bradley’s $21M for a difference of $86M.  Each team absorbs $43M.  This is not a bad idea given that Toronto doesn’t want to pay any more to Wells and in doing so, they’ll take the troublemaker Bradley for a couple of years.  However, if this deal does not go through, the motivated Cubs can look to other teams with expensive contracts such as the Giants’ Barry Zito (4 years remaining at $83M), the Giants’ Aaron Rowand (3 years remaining at $36M), the Indians’ Travis Hafner (3 years remaining at $40.25M), the Dodgers’ Juan Pierre (2 years remaining at $18.5M), and Tampa Bays’ Pat Burrell (1 year at $7M).

Now that Iwamura, 30 is gone, Ben Zobrist or Sean Rodriguez will have more playing time at second base.
